What is 304 stainless steel?

304 stainless steel is a common type of stainless steel with a density of 7.93 g/cm3, also known as 18/8 stainless steel in the industry. It is resistant to high temperatures up to 800 degrees and features good processability and high toughness. It is widely used in industrial and furniture decoration industries as well as the food and medical industries.

Commonly used markings in the market include 06Cr19Ni10, SUS304, where 06Cr19Ni10 generally indicates national standard production, 304 generally indicates ASTM standard production, and SUS 304 indicates Japanese standard production.

304 is a general-purpose stainless steel widely used in the manufacture of equipment and parts requiring good overall performance (corrosion resistance and formability). To maintain the inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel, the steel must contain more than 18 percent chromium and more than 8 percent nickel. 304 stainless steel is a grade of stainless steel produced according to the American ASTM standard.

For 304 stainless steel, the Ni element in its composition is very important, directly determining the corrosion resistance and value of 304 stainless steel.

Important elements in 304 are Ni and Cr, but it contains more than just these two elements. Specific requirements are stipulated by product standards. Common industry judgment considers that as long as the Ni content is greater than 8 percent and the Cr content is greater than 18 percent, it can be considered 304 stainless steel. This is why the industry calls this type of stainless steel 18/8 stainless steel. In fact, relevant product standards have very clear regulations for 304, and these product standards have some differences for stainless steel of different shapes.
