Home Improvement Pipe Selection Tips:
Take a Look
Is the information such as model number, batch number, and standard number complete? Is the brand trademark clear and standardized? Everyone must stay away from counterfeits! In this era of looking at faces, selecting pipes is no different from selecting beauty. Good pipes not only have uniform wall thickness, but also have a pure and uniform color.
Misconception: White PP-R pipes are better?
In fact, all pipes contain color masterbatches, including white ones, but the quality and proportion of color masterbatches meet national standards. If a large amount of calcium powder is added during the production process, the white PP-R pipe will appear grayish white or porcelain white. Many customers find that the buried pipes in their homes are pulverized, and the false welding is separated, causing water leakage 2-3 years after moving into a new house. This is due to this reason. Under the condition of meeting the standard, the darker the pipe color, the better the light shielding performance, and the less likely it is to breed bacteria and algae after water is introduced into the pipe. Therefore, translucent white pipes are not recommended for exposed systems.
Touch it
Both the inner and outer surfaces should be smooth and flat, without surface defects such as dents, bubbles, and cracks, in order to ensure smooth water flow and prevent scaling. If it feels rough to the touch, it may contain other impurities.
Note: Some unscrupulous manufacturers add waste materials to the pipes to reduce costs, which seriously affects water use. Pipes with waste materials usually have uneven interiors, with pinholes or bubbling, and residue will remain on the hot melt head of the hot melt machine during welding.
Measure it
Business transactions hate short weight and measure; if the length, width, and thickness are not in place, can this production process still be believed?
The same water pipe series has standard specifications. For example, the wall thickness of dn20 in the S3.2 pipe series needs to reach 2.8mm. Some water pipes are thinner, only 2.3mm, while the wall thickness of the PP-R water pipe in the right picture reaches 2.8mm (0.8mm white outer layer + 2mm green inner layer). Bring a ruler for on-site inspection!
Misconception: The thicker the wall of the PP-R pipe, the better?
The thicker the pipe is not necessarily better. Because the thicker the pipe, the smaller the flow rate. The key is the uniformity of the wall thickness, which is especially important for hot water systems. Consumers should choose according to the temperature and pressure of the system.
Pinch it
Why do porters often use bamboo carrying poles? Because bamboo is strong, tough, and durable. Pipes also need to have a certain degree of toughness. Apply a certain amount of pressure to the pipe to test the resilience of the pipe. High-quality PP-R pipes have good "resilience", but even the best PP-R pipes can be smashed when the temperature is below 10 degrees.
Misconception: The harder the PP-R pipe, the better?
High hardness does not equal good elasticity. Some manufacturers increase hardness by adding too much calcium carbonate and other impurities, making it impossible to smash them, but they are prone to brittle fracture after prolonged use. Similarly, if the pipe can be easily pinched and deformed, it is also unqualified in terms of hardness.
Smell it
The main material of PP-R pipes is polypropylene. Good pipes have no odor, while poor PP-R pipes may contain polyethylene, which will produce an odor. Therefore, when selecting pipes, use the method of smelling to identify them. Note:
1) Bring your nose close to the pipe and smell it.
2) Boil a certain amount of pipe in hot water and smell it.
During the welding of pipe construction, high-quality PP-R pipes produce no smoke or odor when burned, and the melt is clean and transparent. Inferior pipes will emit black smoke and produce a pungent odor during combustion.
